Dr. Madelon Finkel Is Author of Recent Articles on Shale Gas Extraction

Madelon L. Finkel, PhD
, Professor of Clinical Healthcare Policy and Research and Director of the Office of Global Health Education, is the senior author of two recent articles on shale gas drilling:

  • Shonkoff SB, Hays J, Finkel ML. Environmental Public Health Dimensions of Shale and Tight Gas Development. Environ Health Perspect. 2014 Apr 16. [Epub ahead of print] This review article discusses the evidence of potential environmental public health risks associated with shale gas development, including air and water pollution which has been linked to increases in illness and death. They write that there is a need for more epidemiological studies to assess associations between these risk factors and health outcomes among populations living in close proximity to shale gas operations.
  • Law A, Hays J, Shonkoff SB, Finkel ML. Public Health England's draft report on shale gas extraction. BMJ. 2014 Apr 17;348:g2728. This editorial discusses a number of problems with the conclusions of Public Health England’s draft report on shale gas extraction. The authors write that the report presents a theoretical ability to ensure safety as though sufficient safety practices are actually in effect. They also draw attention to risk factors that cannot be controlled for by safety practices, as well as other defects in the report.
